Their territory corresponded largely to today's Arrondissement in the department of Pyrénées- Orientales Prades in the south west of France (Northern Catalonia ). Origins

In Roman times the Conflent was a dependent Pagus ( " rural district ") of the city Ruscinus ( historical site south of the present Perpignan ). In the course of Christianity in the 4th century it was assigned to the Diocese of Elne / Elna.

The Conflent belonged to the second half of the 9th century to the county Rases. Their counts were Berà ( in the years 801-820 Count of Barcelona), ARGILA, whose son and Berà II, son of ARGILA. In the years 860-870 the Conflent was ruled by the Count of Cerdanya Salomon. His political autonomy received the Conflent finally as Charles the Bald 870 Wilfried appointed the first -haired Count of Urgell, Cerdanya and Conflent and Wilfried then the Conflent to his brother Miro the Elder rendered as an independent viscounts.

Association with the county of Cerdanya

Miró was appointed by King Louis the Stammerer Count of Rosselló ( Roussillon ) 878. At the same time his brother Wilfried Count of Barcelona and Girona was. Miro 878 led the founding of the famous abbey of Sant Miquel de Cuixa after a previous building had been destroyed by a flood. After the death of Miró in the year 895, the county Conflent fell back on his brother Wilfried Cerdanya.

During the 9th century, the Frankish Empire lost its power, and so were after the death of the Hairy Wilfried 897 his sons inherit the counties to take without regard to the king. The Conflent Miró received the Younger ( 897-927 ), who was next to the Cerdanya Count of Berga, capcir and Besalu (from 920). This area remained together throughout most of the 10th century.

After the abdication of Oliba cabretas the Cerdanya ( 988 ) counties were divided among his sons: Oliba ( 971-1046 ) received Ripoll and Hill, Wilfried II of Cerdanya ( 970-1050 ) and the Cerdanya Conflent and Bernard I of Besalu (988-1020), the county Besalu. After Oliba was filed in 1003 his title and entered the monastery founded by Wilfried Ripoll, Berga in the Cerdanya, and Ripoll was connected to Besalu. Both Wilfried and Bernard had a successor. Therefore, eventually separated the Cerdanya and Besalu and formed two independent counties, with Oliba cabretas as a common root, a grandson of the Hairy Wilfried. Here, the Conflent remained united with the County of Cerdanya.
