County of Forcalquier

The county of Forcalquier was a north of the Durance preferred rule, which originated from a part of the County of Provence.

In connection with the numerous divisions of the possession of the Counts of Provence, this part went to the brothers William VI. ( † before 1067) and Gottfried II of Provence ( † 1065/67 ). But the idea of a separate rule of Forcalquier first appears in a document from the year 1111, in the William 's daughter Adelheid called (also Alix ), widow Ermengols IV of Urgell, Countess of Forcalquier. After her death, domination and titles went over to her two grandchildren Guigo and Bertrand I. ( III.). A mandate of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa from December 21, 1174 in favor of William II ( IV ) confirmed the independent rule over a territory that, by and large, the dioceses of Embrun, Gap, Sisteron and Apt and comprised between the Comtat venaissin and the Provence along the Durance extended. Five generations of Forcalquier was in possession of a branch line of the Counts of Urgell, to the territory by the Treaty of Aix ( 1192 ) and the marriage Garsendes II of Forcalquier with Alfonso II of Provence in 1208 again with Provence was pooled.
