County of Melgueil

The county Melgueil (French Comté de Melgueil ) with its capital Melgueil (now Mauguio ) in the department of Hérault previously existed as a county Maguelone already at the time of the Visigoths.

In the 8th century Melgueil became the seat of the Earl, on his behalf, the last valuable deniers of southern France in the 10th century were struck here.

End of the 11th century offered Count Pierre I. his county to the pope, and took it from him in 1085 as a fief back. The county then passed by marriage to Raymond VI. Count of Toulouse, who in 1209 ceded to the Pope. 1215, the county was then given to the bishop of Maguelonne.
