County of Metz

The county Metz originated from the Frankish Metzgau. She went into the second half of the 9th century to the Gerhardiner that simultaneously held the County Paris.

About the Gerhardiner was the county - maybe even in the male line - the Matfriede, in turn, in 1047 received the title of duke of Lorraine ( see house Châtenois ).

The county Metz was a short time later under the suzerainty of the Diocese of Metz, where they came up then.
