County Sligo

Sligo ( Irish: Sligeach, after its eponymous capital today = the shell- rich region / river ) is a county ( county ) in the province of Connacht in the northwest of the Republic of Ireland.

Geography

Sligo is one of the most sparsely populated counties of Ireland. In the east the Ox Mountains lie. The south is dominated by agriculture.

The Sligo town is surrounded by sea from three bays and is landside guarded by two mountains - the Knock area on which the legend is by the grave of Queen Maeve, and the impressive Benbulben Mountain, buried at the foot of which William Butler Yeats is, who was a famous Irish poet ( Yeats County Sligo is also called ). The natural charm of Sligo landscapes situated in the forests, lakes and steep mountains. Although one can say of many parts of Ireland a mystical, unspoiled nature, the county Sligo in this regard is yet to be regarded as particularly outstanding. In places, the county is so natural, and that progress is only on horseback or by car. The coast with its sandy beaches has a lot to offer.

The place is rather Sligo characterized by its regional culture as it is expressed in the works of local musicians, poets and painters.

History

Already 4000 years BC cultured people, the region and survived thanks to the collection of mussels, oysters and other mollusks and shellfish. A Causewayed camp was excavated at Magheraboy as a testimony of the first farming settlers. About five kilometers south of the regional airport in one of the largest collections of megalithic remains in Europe has been found. Carrowmore is a paradise for archaeologists. For interested visitors an opportunity to discover an environment of prehistoric man.

Due to the fact that Sligo is located in a strategic place (on the road that leads to the north), the county was victim of the attacks of clan chiefs as well as the English. In 1588, ships of the Spanish Armada by a storm on the wide beach were destroyed by Streedagh. Some Spaniards, who were found by residents, managed to escape the British and return to Spain. 1570 the present county was founded. She has also played a role in the rebellion war in 1798; the Franco- Irish army to back the Englishman succeeded. Personalities

Born in Dublin poet and Nobel laureate William Butler Yeats has come up with a lot of inspiration from the region of Co. Sligo; so also the word of the Yeats County was created.

From Ballymote in Sligo came Francis Taaffe and brother Walfrid.

Sligo is home to three members of Westlife: Kian Egan, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily.

Leo Milligan (father of Spike Milligan ) was born Sligonian; on June 26, 2005 Spike was unveiled in honor of a plaque.

Elizabeth Rosanna Gilbert, known as Lola Montez ( born February 17, 1821 in Grange, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; † January 17, 1861 in New York) was an Irish dancer and a mistress of King Ludwig of Bavaria.
