The Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences ( CIMS ) is a division of New York University ( NYU). It is named after Richard Courant, who was from 1936 to 1972 professor of mathematics at New York University.

Courant founded at New York University, the Department of Mathematics. In 1946 it was renamed the Institute for Mathematics and Mechanics.

1952 by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission one of the first (electronic) computer was built, which led to the founding of the Courant Mathematics and Computing Laboratory. Additional departments were in 1954, the magnetometer Division of Fluid Dynamics and 1978, the Division of Computational Fluid Dynamics.
