Courgis

Courgis is a commune in the French department Yonne ( Burgundy region) in the near Auxerre and Pontigny. The municipality has 259 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), has an area of 10.04 km ² and is situated at an altitude of 169 meters above the sea. Courgis is located not far from Chablis.

Economy and infrastructure

Courgis is a predominantly by agriculture (viticulture and fruit growing ) embossed village. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The Chablis is the northernmost wine region in Burgundy. On the limestone slopes exclusively Chardonnay is grown. The vineyards spread over Courgis and 19 adjacent municipalities. The winery also have the right, regional appellations Bourgogne, Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne Passe Tout Grain, Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire and Crémant de Bourgogne to use.

Population

With 259 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Courgis one of the small communities of the department of Yonne. Once the population has decreased in the first half of the 20th century, a stabilization of population was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Sons and daughters of the town

  • Nicolas Edme de la Bretonne Restif spent some years of his youth and received in Courgis 1748-1750 his education with two of his half brothers.
