Court Theatre of Buda

The Burgtheater (Hungarian: Varszinhaz ) in the Castle District of Budapest 's oldest permanent theater.

History

In place of today's theater was a Franciscan monastery in the 13th century. With the Turkish occupation the local church was converted to a mosque. 1686 plunged the building one at the siege of oven. A new Baroque church was built in 1725-1736 for Carmelite Order. 1784 sparked King Joseph II to the Order and ordered the 1786 conversion to a theater to where the plays were performed in the German language. As of October 1790 there were performances in Hungarian.
