Courtavon

Courtavon ( originally German Ottendorf ) is a commune in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. The municipality has 328 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and covers 9.6 square kilometers. Courtavon is a member of the Association of Municipalities Alsatian Jura ( CCJA ).

Geography

Courtavon is located on the upper Largue in southern Sundgau. The border with Switzerland in the West is just 1.5 kilometers away. Ferrette in the Northeast is about kilometers km north lie Altkirch ( sub-prefecture ), approximately 25 kilometers and about Mulhouse kilometers away. After Basel in the north- east there are about 38 kilometers.

Neighboring municipalities are Liebsdorf in the northeast, Oberlarg in the east, Levoncourt in the south, southwest, and Bonfol Vendlincourt in the northwest.

To the northeast of the village center there is a campground at the Grand Etang, a lake to 438 meters above sea level.

History

Since 1179 the village is under the name Cortamund, in the following period as Ottendorf known.
