Coussey

Coussey is a commune in the Vosges department in the Lorraine region; it belongs to the district Neufchâteau, is the capital of the eponymous canton Coussey and seat of the municipality Association Pays de Jeanne.

Geography

The 725 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) scoring Coussey community located about 40 kilometers south of Toul, near the border with the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle. The nearest small town is Neufchâteau in six kilometers away.

The upper Meuse flows through the municipal area from south to north and forms with numerous meanders and the two inland islands Le Closelot and L' Îlotte an approximately 1500 meters wide valley. On the northern outskirts of the village flows the Vair, at the southern end the Saônelle into the Meuse. The 16 km ² large municipality of Coussey reflected primarily in the valley area around the village of meadows and fields, while to the west are predominantly woods ( Bois de Coussey and Bois des Combelles ). The Meuse is located at about 270 m; the west of the Meuse hills that reach heights of up to 422 m. The surveys are part of the 200 km long ridge Côtes de Meuse.

To Coussey part of the district of La Croix Noire, which was applied transversely to the right bank of the Meuse following main settlement axis.

Neighboring communities of Coussey are ( clockwise starting from the north ) Domremy- la -Pucelle, Maxey -sur -Meuse, Moncel -sur- Vair, Soulosse -sous -Saint- Élophe, Neufchâteau, Frebécourt, Sionne and Seraumont.

History

The place was named in medieval Latin Cussiacum. Linguists of the 19th century represented a context forth with the Gallic personal name Coccius. The community Coussey in its present form was established on August 17, 1736 as part of the Bailiwick Neufchâteau. The church belonged to the deanery in the Diocese of Toul Neufchâteau, from 1778 to the newly formed Diocese of Saint- Dié. The parish was under the influence of the Abbot of St. Mansuy ( Mansuetus ).

On 31 December 1998 Coussey was due to the central location of the seat of the newly established Joint Authority Pays de Jeanne.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality Coussey - adopted in 1866 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the annexation of the Duchy of Lorraine to France - is in the right half part of the coat of arms of the county bar, left the red oblique beams with three silver gestümmelten eagles on a golden shield the Lorraine coat of arms. In the center of the emblem, a blue crescent, which commemorates a journey of Touler Count Mathieu de Lorraine to the Holy Land the year 1214. Instead of the crescent, there is also an interpretation as majuscule C for Coussey.

Economy and infrastructure

Agriculture today plays a minor role in Coussey. Many residents commute to the nearby city of Neufchâteau or working in the tourism sector (accommodation many guests who visit the birthplace of Joan of Arc in the small neighboring village of Domremy- la -Pucelle ). Coussey has a post office and is beyond kindergarten and primary school site, and the site of a gendarmerie brigade.

By Coussey the trunk road (D 164) of Bains -les- Bains via Darney, Contrexévillenear and Neufchâteau to Commercy ( and the Meuse Valley Continuing on to Verdun ). More road connections are available to Gironcourt -sur- Vraine and Liffol -le -Grand. 24 km southeast of Coussey is the nearest ramp to Autoroute A31 ( Toul -Dijon ). The former station Cossey, nor the street, Rue de la Gare is reminiscent of the lay at the 1873 opened rail line from Neufchâteau on Vaucouleurs after Pagny -sur -Meuse, which was shut down in 1990 for passenger traffic. The remaining freight traffic on the 7.5 km long section of Neufchâteau after Coussey is operated by the SNCF.
