Covadonga

Covadonga ( Asturian Cuadonga ) is a place in Spain. It belongs to the municipality as Parroquia Cangas de Onis in Asturias. The place is a station on the northern variant of the Spanish Camino de Santiago, Camino de la Costa.

Geography

The village with its 68 inhabitants ( 2011) on an area of 2.54 km ² is located on 253 msnm in the Picos de Europa. Covadonga is located 11 km from the center of the municipality of Cangas de Onís, which belongs to the comarca of Oriente.

History

The name is composed of cova ( vulgar Latin for " cave " ) and donga ( from Latin Domnica, dominica = " the Lord" or " Lady "). In the cave of Covadonga, there was already at the time of the Western Goth, a Marian shrine. 722 The Battle of Covadonga was held there in which Pelayo, the leader of a Christian army, won a victory over Muslim forces. This success marks the beginning of the Reconquista. The Asturian chronicles of king Alfonso III. contains a report stating that in this battle heavenly intervention protected the Marian Shrine and the victory brought about. Therefore, Covadonga was a Marian shrine. The " Virgin of Covadonga " was built a basilica.

Climate

The climate is maritime and humid with cool summers and mild winters according to the coastal area. In the hinterland there is some of a mountain climate.

Cycling increase

In cycling, the street belongs up at the Lagos de Covadonga among the most famous climbs of the Vuelta a Espana. The increase of around 200 to 1110 meters above sea level is an average of 6.3 % and a maximum of 13 % steep.

In 1983 the lakes of Covadonga above first destination of a Vuelta stage, since the increase is a oftmaliger peak in the Tour of Spain program, most recently in 2010 and again in 2012 is on the agenda. Each won twice Laurent Jalabert and Lucho Herrera the mountain top finish. Reimund Dietzen decided in 1984 so far the only German race itself. In 2010, the Spaniard Carlos Barredo won this mountain stage to Lagos de Covadonga.

The specialized cycling book publishing Covadonga has been named after the Vuelta increase.
