Covenanter

As Covenanters (of English covenant - " covenant " ) applies to those Scottish groups who had pledged themselves in an oath of allegiance to the national Covenant on 28 February 1638 noted for their church on Presbyterianism. The oath is considered to be a direct response to the attempt by Archbishop William Laud, the Anglican Book of Common Prayer embossed introduce in the Scottish state church. The aim of the Covenanters was to support the Reformed theology and Presbyterian constitution of the Church. To this end, they put the existing episcopate among English Stuart kings resisted. The Covenanters were marked not only by the rise of federal theology, but also inspired by a democratic impulse for religious freedom, expressed in a nationalistic desire for freedom from England.

The first Covenant was signed in December 1557. A great importance was the covenant of 1581, which was formed at the initiative of John Craig for the Church of Scotland in the fight against a recatholicization Scotland.
