Coverham Abbey

Coverham Abbey was a Premonstratensian establishment near Leyburn (North Yorkshire ) in the UK.

History

The Premonstratensian followed initially a reputation of Helewisia, daughter of Ranulf de Glanville, after Swainby, where they settled in 1190. This was possibly due to a Filation of Durford Abbey in Sussex. The Premonstratensian were brought to 1212 Helewisias son Ranulf fitzRalph after Coverham. In Swainby today testifies to nothing more from the first settlement. In Coverham a new monastery was built, the church was the patronal feast of St. Mary of Charity. After Scots raids 1331/32, the church had to be prepared again. The dissolution of the monastery was 1536. Church and convent buildings were partially demolished and integrated into a manor of the 18th century. From the former monastery church only a few fragments testify. Get yourself have especially the Tor and guesthouse of the monastery.
