Covington County (Alabama)

The Covington County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 37 631 inhabitants and a population density of 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Andalusia.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme south of Alabama, on the northern border of Florida and has an area of ​​2704 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers of water surfaces. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Escambia County, Conecuh County, Butler County, Crenshaw County, Coffee County and Geneva County.

History

Covington County was formed on 17 December 1821. It was named after Brigadier General Leonard Covington Wailes from Maryland, a soldier in the great Indian war of 1812.
