Cowal

Cowal (Gaelic: Comhghall or Còmhall ) is a peninsula in the Scottish unitary authority Argyll and Bute. She was part of the traditional Scottish county of Argyllshire.

Geography

The peninsula extends over a length of about 50 km long and runs in a southwesterly direction. In the north, it is connected by a 13 km wide isthmus between Loch Long and Loch Fyne to the Scottish mainland. In the west, the coastline follows the inlet of Loch Fyne to finally Ardlamont Point the southern tip of the Cowal is reached. At this chapter the Kyles of Bute branch off from the Bute Sound and form the southern coast of the peninsula. At this cut with hole Riddon and Loch Striven two side bays of the Strait of up to 13 kilometers into the land mass Cowals one. The Cape Point Toward marks the south-eastern tip Cowals. There, the Kyles of Bute open into the Firth of Clyde, which limits the peninsula for 15 km in a north-easterly direction. From the Strone Point at the end of Holy Loch, the coastline follows the estuary Loch Long. In the north limit the valleys Croe Glen and Glen Kinglas, through which runs the A83, the peninsula. The highest point Cowals is located on the northern border in the Arrochar Alps Beinn an Lochain with a height of 901 m. The elongated, narrow Loch Eck and the dam hole Tarsan there are two larger lakes on the peninsula.

Settlement and infrastructure

Cowal is sparsely populated and has few large towns or cities, especially along the coast, on. Among the most important towns include Dunoon, Innellan and Tighnabruaich. In particular, the interior Cowals is rural and shows scattered agricultural settlements. These are connected by few roads, which constitute the bulk of the transport infrastructure. These include the east along the coast on Dunoon and Innellan to the southeastern tip leading A815 and the A886, which links the western and central areas and up to a ferry to the opposite island of Bute, where they will continue.
