Cowboy Junkies

The Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian band. They are considered as a style- band of the alt-country and combine elements of indie rock, blues, folk and country music.

Band History

The band formed in 1985 in Toronto. Founding members are the siblings Michael (* April 21, 1959 ), Peter ( born October 29, 1965) and Margo (* June 27, 1961 ) Timmins and Alan Anton ( born June 22, 1959 as Alan Alizojvodic ), the previously with Michael Timmins had played in other bands.

Their debut album, Whites Off Earth Now! predominantly contained cover versions of Lightnin ' Hopkins, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and Big Joe Williams. Only the song Take Me was written by Margo and Michael Timmins. The album was recorded in 1986 in a garage and sold through their own label Latent Recordings.

The second album, The Trinity session from 1988 is still the best known of the band. It was recorded on 27 November 1987 in a 14- hour session with a single microphone in a church Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. In addition to the six original compositions to it, see, inter alia, Cover versions of Sweet Jane ( Lou Reed ) I'm So Lonesome I Could and Cry ( Hank Williams). The success of this album brought the Cowboy Junkies in 1989 a record contract with RCA Records a. In total, over 1.5 million copies have been sold.

1990 saw the album The caution horses and a tour along with Townes Van Zandt. He wrote the song Cowboy Junkies Lament, for which Michael Timmins returned the favor with Townes ' Blues for the band. Both songs can be found on the published 1992 album Black eyed man. After the album Pale sun crescent moon (1993 ) the band moved to RCA and Geffen Records in 1996 brought the album Lay it down out. It is the first that contains all original material. After publication of the album Miles from our home (1998), the contract with Geffen Records. The next album Open was again brought out of my own label Latent Recordings 2001.

For the twentieth anniversary of The Trinity session appeared Trinity Revisited 2007 album and documentary. Recorded at the site of the original recording, Natalie Merchant, Ryan Adams and Vic Chesnutt are doing this time as a guest singer.
