Cowley County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Winfield.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kansas, on the south by Oklahoma and has an area of ​​2933 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Butler County, Elk County, Chautauqua County, Sumner County and Sedgwick County.

History

Cowley County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Butler County. It was named after Matthew Cowley, an important figure in the American Civil War.
