Cowling

The Cowling referred to in the language flyer cover the aircraft engine or aircraft engines or engines. The English word derived from the Latin cuculla Cowling ( " hood ").

A cowling serves

  • To reduce the air resistance
  • As part of the cooling system (influence of the air flow for cooling )
  • An air inlet for jet engines
  • As an ornamental element

For single-engined airplanes the engine is mounted usually in front of the cockpit so that pilots " on the cowling look ", which is used by these pilots synonymous to look ahead.

Classic Cowlings are for example the NACA hood or the Townend ring, which were utilized in radial engines. By design nowadays used piston engines, such as the 912 or any of the Lycoming O -235, and obtained speed in general aviation is aerodynamically a cowling today strongly recommended.
