Processor architecture [ the; Most architectures ] refers to the structure of processors and a processor core. An electronic circuit is called a processor or processor core, if it has registers for performing Boolean algebra, in the form of logic gates, or more generally an arithmetic logic unit (ALU), a control unit for program control, a storage unit and a bus system for communication. Processor architectures differ in the nature and extent of these units.

AMD64, VLIW and MIPS are examples of processor architectures. They belong to the microprocessor architectures. There may be within an architecture processors with multiple cores, even a mixed structure is possible ( multiple cores of different architecture, such as IBM's Cell processor as a combination of PowerPC and SPEs ).

While be used with 32 or 64 bit data width as the main processor in modern PCs or servers only processors are special purpose processors such as microcontrollers, signal processors, graphics cards, and bus controller for very different tasks in use.

In contrast to virtually all of the above processors are clocked, it is also unclocked asynchronous processors. Since they do not require clocking, asynchronous processors have a better electromagnetic compatibility and consume during process rests hardly current. Theoretically, their performance fits to the electro- physical possibilities and the software logical requirement situation. However, there are for asynchronous digital circuits far less mature development techniques, which is why this approach is rarely followed.
