Crafoord Prize

The Crafoord Prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Its purpose is to honor and promote basic research in disciplines that are not covered by the Nobel Prize. These include mathematics, earth sciences, biology ( especially in the direction of Ecology and Evolution ) and astronomy. It is named after its founder, industrialist Holger Crafoord.

The Crafoord Prize is awarded only once a year, but can be divided into up to three winners. The first time the award in 1982, the prize money was 400 000 SEK, which is about U.S. $ 60,000 equivalent. At present ( 2013) is the prize 4,000,000 Swedish kronor.
