Craig Barron

Craig Barron ( born April 6, 1961 in Berkeley, California ) is a special effects and matte painting artists. He received in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Life

At the age of 18 he began to work at Industrial Light & Magic. He was the youngest employee at ILM, who worked in the field of matte painting in the feature film The Empire Strikes Back. In the following years he worked for ILM on such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark and ET - The Extra-Terrestrial. From 1984 he was head of photography in the mat Department. In this position, he produced films like Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, In Search of the Golden Child and The Miracle on 8th Street.

In 1988 he founded together with Michael Pangrazio and Krystyna Demkowicz the special effects company Matte World, which was renamed in Matte World Digital in 1992. With this company, he worked in the following years countless films as matte painting artist. He was returning for an Oscar nomination in the category Best Visual Effects for his work on the feature film Batman in 1993, but the price was Death Becomes Her. In his second nomination in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, he finally received the award along with Eric Barba, Steve Preeg and Burt Dalton. In 2012, the company was dissolved.
