The striker played in the youth from the Glasgow rivals Rangers, but was released by the then coach Dick Advocaat and joined Celtic on. The situation was similar at Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain, during their youth but changed as fans of the Rangers to Celtic.

After he was able to achieve four goals late in the season 2004/ 05, he began the 2005/06 season with three games in a row, each with a goal that was not Scottish Celtic player since Gerry Creaney succeeded. He scored seven goals in the first three months of the season, but an injury in the game against Dundee United forced him to convert the rest of the season. Beattie was an outstanding scorer already in youth. He was able to mark in a preseason game of the U-19 Celtic against Derry City all six goals in a 6-0 victory. Derry's youth coach James O'Kane said after the game that Beattie's presentation on the court at the same time it " sweetens and ruined the day " has.

After a long injury break, he did not return until early 2007, back to Celtic. Abolished there but not the desired success and moved on to season 2007/ 08 at West Bromwich Albion to England. On 28 August 2009 the Scottish attacker transferred to the Championship club Swansea City, where he signed a three-year contract. In February 2012, Beattie signed a contract with Heart of Midlothian.
