The name is derived from the name of Craig Newmark, who founded a website first for the San Francisco Bay Area.

After 1999, followed by a rapid spread, first in the U.S., then worldwide in 50 states currently.

The actual organization was operated with 28 people in 2009 and is financed by advertising fees.

With more than 20 billion page visits and in the U.S. alone around 50 million users per month, the company is the world on the 49th place of the most visited websites. With more than 80 million new ads per month, it is the largest company of its kind
