Cramme is a municipality in the forest or in the district of Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany.

Geographical Location

The town is located southwest of Wolfenbüttel and west of the Oder Forest.

Cramme is predominantly agricultural, but due to the proximity to the city of Wolfenbüttel and to the city of Salzgitter, with its various industrial companies (MAN, VW, Salzgitter AG) also significance as the residence for the people employed there.

History

Origin of the name

The town was first mentioned in writing in 1150 as " Cramme ". Since then, the name varied only occasionally - occasionally is " Kramme " ( 1269 ) or " junk " ( 1242 ), the speech - and has survived to this day in the first form. It is assumed in the name of a form Cramme or Cramma, has derived from the Indo-European " grem " (wet ) or Gothic " qrammiþa " (moisture) and the Old Norse " kramr " ( moist, halbgetaut of snow). Cramme lies to the west of the Oder forest, from which a plurality of streams flow down the west slopes towards Cramme. This geographical location could have been a motive for the choice of the place name.
