Cranial nerve nucleus

Cranial nerve nuclei are groups of neurons ( so-called " core " or "core areas", nuclei ), extend their axons in the cranial nerves III to XII. Thus, on the one hand nuclei of origin of the motor cranial nerves (comparable to the motor neurons of the anterior horns of the spinal cord ), on the other hand, they correspond to the sensory nuclei of the posterior column of the spinal cord.

The cranial nerve II ( optic nerve ) is not really a peripheral nerve, but a protrusion of the brain, since it is surrounded by dura mater, arachnoid and pia mater.
