Craniosynostosis

The term craniosynostosis refers to premature ossification of one or more cranial sutures, which begins in part to the unborn child. The usual growth of the skull is not possible and thus a so-called compensatory growth occurs. This causes abnormal skull shapes ( craniostenosis ). If several sutures are concerned, surgical correction is necessary to provide space for the brain growth. Today, however, almost all affected children (approximately 1 per 2000 births) surgery.

According to a 2011 study published by the University College London, the risk of malformations of the skull is increased by 33 percent if a mother smokes during pregnancy.
