Crankset

As chainring set, crankset, crankset or crank system (also crank set ) is called, which consists of one or more chainrings and cranks unit on a bicycle. It is used for power transmission of the torque from the crank axle to the rear wheel and the chain.

In addition to simple chain rings there are two and three times the chainring sets. The triple sets came up with the mountain bikes in the early 1980s, two times there were until then only on road bikes. Several chainrings are needed when the switching capacity of the ( rear ) switching mechanism is not sufficient. To activate the front circuit over- throwers were originally used ( simple lever on the seat tube), since the late 1960s are derailleur with Bowden cables usual. These derailleurs were initially attached to the upper third of the tube, the service was used to. Mid-1980s, the switches were moved to the handlebars. For road bikes a few years later brake shift lever came on the market. Other bikes have today either twist shifters for operating the derailleur or differently designed gear lever.
