Craon (Mayenne)

Craon is a commune with 4522 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire; it belongs to the district of Château- Gontier and Canton Craon.

History

Craon was a remarkable fortress, consisting of 27 towers and 1,600 meters above sea walls that served to secure the border of France to Brittany in the Middle Ages. The Lords of Craon (see Craon (Family) ) were among the first barons of Anjou. In the 8th Huguenot War ( 1585-1598 ) Craon was besieged by the royal army, but horrified by the Spanish troops, who had landed in Brittany (see also: Battle of Craon of 23 May 1592)
