Crataegus × lavallei

In the Lederblättrigen hawthorn or apple hawthorn (Crataegus x lavallei ' Carrierei '), is the variety ' Carrierei ' of " Lavallées Hawthorn " (C. × lavallei Herincq ex Lavallée ), who was bred in 1870 in France. Lavallées Hawthorn is a hybrid of cock spur - Hawthorn (Crataegus crus- galli ) with Crataegus pubescens fo. stipulacea ( Loudon ) Stapf.

Description

The up to 7 m high, deciduous, small tree falls on late sprouting by decorative ornamental fruit. The plant has strong up to 5 cm long thorns. The leathery leaves are undivided, ovate and alternate, its edge is serrated. They adhere to in the winter. The fall foliage is striking orange-yellow.

The white flowers with pink stamens appear in May-June. The ripe apple fruits are orange to brick- and 1 to 2 cm in size. They often remain on the trees until January.

Use / use

The Lederblättrige hawthorn is often planted as an attractive street tree for greening the city center ( eg Mainz, Bad Kissingen, Vatican City ) because of its decorative fruit jewelery and coloring of autumn leaves. Usually it is the variety Crataegus x lavallei ' Carrierei '. The tree is resistant to urban climates, drought and tolerates pruning. This species bears white flowers in May with pink stamens, the fruit is quite large. The fruits are rarely utilized in the kitchen.

The cultivar ' Aurora' grows upright, compact with bright orange fruits that stick up in the winter.
