Crawford County (Kansas)
Crawford County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Girard.
Geography
The County is located almost in the extreme southeast of Kansas, on the east by Missouri, is located in the south about 40 miles from Oklahoma and has an area of 1541 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Bourbon County, Cherokee County, Labette County and Neosho County.
History
Crawford County was formed on February 13, 1867 from portions of Bourbon County and Cherokee County. It was named after Samuel J. Crawford, the third governor of Kansas.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Crawford County 38 242 people in 15,504 households and 9441 families in Crawford County. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.29 percent White, 1.83 percent African American, 0.94 percent Native American, 1.11 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.11 percent from other races groups; 1.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 15,504 households out of which 28.5 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 47.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers and 39.1 percent were non-families. 30.6 percent of all households were single-person households and 13.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 16.4 percent of 18 to 24 years 25.0 percent between 25 and 44, 20.2 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 92.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,409, and the median income for a family was $ 40,582. Males had a median income of $ 27,881, women $ 21,517. The per capita income was $ 16,245. 9.4 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
