Crawford County (Wisconsin)

The Crawford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2010, the County had 16,644 inhabitants and a population density of 11.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Prairie du Chien, which was named after the French name of Prairie of the Dog, an Indian chief.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Wisconsin, north of the mouth of the Wisconsin River in the border with Iowa forming Mississippi. It covers an area of 1552 square kilometers, of which 69 square kilometers are water surface. At the Crawford County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Crawford County was formed in 1818 as an original county from parts of the Wisconsin Territory. It was named for William H. Crawford, of the Treasury under James Monroe at this time. The first trading post here was established in 1685.

Population

According to the census in 2010 lived in Crawford County 16,644 people in 6785 households. The population density was 11.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 6785 households lived statistically 2.35 per person.
