Spitzkopfgrundel ( Butis butis )

The Spitzkopfgrundel ( Butis butis ) is a 15 inches long expectant fish from the family of Schläfergrundeln ( Eleotridae ). It occurs on the coast of the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa, India, the Malay Archipelago to the north coast Australia and Fiji in brackish and sea water.

Features

Spitzkopfgrundeln have an elongated, round in cross section and rear only laterally flattened body, a large flattened head and a large mouth with protruding lower jaw. The Vorkiemendeckel has no spine. Depending on the origin and being of the animals show a different color. The basic color is yellow-brown to gray- brown. There are also dark longitudinal bands, irregular transverse bands, which may be absent, and reddish or dark brown dots. Dark Binding ranging from the eye to the front tip of the snout and back to the gill cover. The first, hartstrahlige dorsal fin is blackish or gray usually and often shows red tips. The other fins are yellow to purple, their fin rays are often reddish. The anal fin has a yellow hem and often has silvery points. The pectoral fins have a bright red, dark rimmed spot at the base. The caudal fin is black with a bright outer edge.

Way of life

The Spitzkopfgrundel lives in brackish and sea water in mangroves, lagoons and estuaries, usually in regions with more or less dense vegetation and muddy ground. She avoids pure fresh water, feeds on small fish and crustaceans and is a substrate spawner.
