Credential

A Proof of Entitlement (English credentials ) is a tool that is a system confirm the identity of another system or a user. This usually happens in the form of a user ID in conjunction with an authentication feature.

Credentials can be physical or components for access or access authorization, such as smart cards or key identity documents, certificates, passwords or results of cryptographic methods.

Example situation

A user wants to log on to a system, for example, to access a protected resource. The following processes must be run through this:

  • Authentication (or authentication ): The identity of the user is detected.
  • Authorization: It is checked whether the particular user has the necessary rights, is therefore entitled to access to the required resources so that a controlled opening of the protection of the IT resource can be made according to the set access or access rights.

To authenticate, the user is now in a client 's user ID and password as credentials on the basis of which the server can authenticate him.

The permission level allows a user due to preset rights to edit or delete certain files or processes.
