Cremnomys

The Indian rock rats ( Cremnomys ) are a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes two species.

General

These rodents reach a body length of about 11 to 15 centimeters and a tail length of 14 to 20 cm. Their fur is whitish gray at the top and at the bottom.

Habitat of these animals are rocky regions in central and southern India, also come in deserts. They are nocturnal, as a shelter them serve crevices. The reproduction is seasonal and dependent on the rainy season, otherwise nothing is known about the lifestyle.

System

The Indian rock rats are part of the Millardia - generic group within the Altweltmäuse.

There are two types:

  • Cremnomys cutchicus lives in the north-western, eastern and southern India.
  • Cremnomys elvira is known only from a small area in the state of Tamil Nadu.

While C. cutchicus is common and not endangered, C. elvira is that a 10 km ² large area inhabited by the IUCN as " critically endangered " ( critically endangered ) listed.
