Crenicichla

Xingu comb grouper, Crenichla Xingu 1

The pike or comb cichlids ( Crenichla ) are a genus of cichlid from the tropical and subtropical South America. The scientific genus name refers to the sawed Vorkiemendeckel respect ( Gr. " krene " = comb Cichla, a genus of cichlid ).

Features

Pike cichlids are 8 to 30 inches long. Your body is pike -like elongated, the number of vortices is high ( at least 32). There are more than hull - caudal vertebrae, whereas the reverse is true with most other cichlids. The dorsal fin is relatively long, with 16 to 24 spines and 11 to 19 soft rays. The anal fin is short and is the soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin opposite symmetrical. In the males, both fins are pointed. The lower jaw is usually present.

Way of life

Pike cichlids are predatory fish that can overwhelm with their deeply cleft mouth also prey fish that are not very much smaller than themselves fish are captured in a lightning-fast advance and swallowed head first. Pike cichlids are cavity nesters that attach their eggs to the side walls or the ceiling of a cave. The female looks after the spawn, while the male defends the territory. Are the young fish hatched both parents carry the young fish swarm.

Dissemination

Pike cichlids live in all of South America east of the Andes; their southern limit of distribution is the Río Negro in northern Patagonia. They also occur on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, in the three Guiana, the Amazon basin, in the basin of the Orinoco River, the Paraguay and the Río Paraná and in most coastal rivers between the mouth of the Amazon and the Rio de la Plata.

Inside systematics

There are more than 85 described species and about 25 undescribed. The genus Teleocichla, a cichlid group that is highly adapted to flow- rich habitats is phylogenetically within Crenichla. Crenichla is divided according to shed size, color, color change at the transition from the juvenile stage to the adult stage and other characteristics in a number of species groups that can be to separate genera in the future. The genus is greatly in need of revision.
