Cres (town)

The town of Cres [ tsrɛs ] ( Crepsa Latin, Greek Χερσος, Italian Cherso, German outdated Kersch ) is the capital of the island ( largest) Croatian island of Cres.

History

The name of Cres ( German outdated: Kersch ) stems from the late antique " Crepsa ". Before the island was inhabited by Croatians Cres belonged to the Liburni, but there are also Greek, Roman and Byzantine traces.

From the 9th century to the year 1409 the whole island was under Croatian rule. The Cres statute dates back to the year 1332.

By the year 1797 Cres was belonging to the Venetian Empire. 1805-1814 under French occupation, it was then up to 1918 to Austria - Hungary. During the First World War it was conquered by Italy, before it fell into the hands of the German army in 1943. With the end of World War II Cres finally fell back to Croatia and became integrated into the state of Yugoslavia.

The church today Cres covers all localities of the northern and central part of the island, while the villages of the southern part of Mali Lošinj belong. After the counting of 2011, the municipality has 2,879 inhabitants.
