Crete Senesi

The Crete Senesi (literally: the clay minerals from Siena) are embossed by erosion central Italian landscape, which lies in an area of Tuscany south of Siena. It comprises the territories of the municipalities of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d' Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d' Asso, all of which are in the province of Siena. Within the Crete in Asciano municipality is the Accona Desert ( Deserto di Accona Italian ), in which the Olivetans mother monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore has settled. The Accona Desert is located in the Badlands and is only 600 mm of precipitation per year very low rainfall.

As in all Badlands caused by weathering of the clay, which is called here Mattaione, furrows on the southern slopes, the so-called gullies. Typical of the Crete Senesi are the Biancane, white, a few meters high hill with narrow furrows and without any vegetation. The number of Biancane since the 1980s was particularly through the use of agricultural machinery drastically.
