Cricova (Cyrillic Крикова, Russian Krikowo / Криково ) is a small town about 15 km north of Chisinau in Moldova. The city has a population of 14,500 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2006) and belongs to Munizip Chisinau.

Wine collection Cricova

Cricova is known for its underground tunnel system with one of the largest wine collections in the world. Due to its size and importance, it is also often referred to as the underground city and is a tourist attraction, comparable to the champagne cellars of Champagne. In the underground labyrinth with 120 km long system of tunnels only half of the tunnels are used for wine storage. In one part there are Degustierräume. The underground streets are named after the wines are stored in them: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay. In previous years, in some places even today, here limestone was mined.

At a depth up to 100 m and an area of ​​about 53 ha mature now about 1.25 million bottles of wine. The winery Cricova houses one of the most extensive wine collection of Moldova. Here, among other things, a part of Herrmann Goering's wine cellar is stored since the end of World War II, the rest is located in the Crimea. Here, the only remaining copy of Mogit David Oster wine is from the year 1902. The storage of bottled wine goes back to a decision of the winery administration of 18 August 1954. In 1967 the collection of the winery Cricova was named the official collection of the republic. It included then 465 varieties of brandy, fortified wines and wine.

Selected Cricova wines were delivered to the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Hungary in 1958. On the international wine fairs of Ljubljana and Budapest Cricova - vintage and varietal wines Fetească Alba and Aligoté won silver medals.

Characteristic of the winery is the production of sparkling wine, the Méthode champenoise analog. Cricova is the only Moldovan winery and one of four wineries in the Commonwealth of Independent States, this method practiced since 1956.
