Crimea Memorial Church

The Crimea Memorial Church ( Crimean Memorial Church, Turkish Kırım'ı Anma Kilisesi or Maria Kilisesi ), also known as Christ Church, is a church of the Church of England in the district of Beyoğlu (formerly Pera ) in Istanbul.

History

The church was built on a donated by the Ottoman sultan Abdülmecid piece of land 1858-1868 to commemorate the the Crimean War in 1853 involved British soldiers built.

The idea of ​​establishing a memorial church in Constantinople Opel was first taken up in 1856. Proclaimed to the architectural competition won William Burges. However, infighting resulted in the adoption committee, coupled with concerns regarding the proposed " un-English " style architecture to the fact that he removed in 1863 as an architect from the post and was replaced by George Edmund Street ( 1824-1881 ). The church was completed at the end of the 19th century and closed in 1978 due to the too small Anglican community. It was reopened in 1991.
