Crispin van den Broeck

Crispin van den Broeck (* 1523 in Mechelen, † 1591 ) was a Flemish painter, engraver and architect.

Life

He was the son of the painter Jan van den Broeck, who probably him and his two brothers Willem and Hendrick trained first.

Crispin was more attracted to the history and became a pupil of Frans Floris (Frans de Vriendt ). 1555 could be he enroll as a member of the Guild of St. Luke at Antwerp and in 1575 he joined the fund. On May 19, 1559, he received the right of citizenship in Antwerp. He supplied in 1566 and the Plantinsche printing at Antwerp ( Arias Montanus, Humanae salutis Monurnenta ). The brothers Wiericx, which also worked for Plantin, stung many of his pictures.

In 1583 he painted for the Confraternity of the Romanists - the only members resumed when these had been in Rome - images of their patron saints, St. Peter and St. Paul. 1588 he took Pieter van der Wal on as a student.

Crispin van den Broeck signed very uneven. So Crispin are also Crispiaen, Crispan, Crispiniaen, Crispi, Crispyn and Crispine to find what is said to have often led to confusion.

Family

His daughter Barbara van den Broeck ( 1560 - after 1608) was also a painter and engraver.
