Cristoforo Negri

Cristoforo Negri ( born June 13, 1809 in Milan, † 1896) was an Italian politician, diplomat and geographer.

Negri studied at the Universities of Pavia, Graz, Vienna and Prague. In 1843 he was named " Professor of political science " called to the University of Padua. During the Wars of Independence, he turned in 1848 as one of the first among the professors to the Italian side. As Rector of the University Negri armed students, but had to on June 10, 1848 evacuate the city after the fall of Vicenza. He turned to Turin, where he was soon thereafter Rector of the University and entered the ministry under Vincenzo Gioberti.

After the battle of Novara, he was director of the consulate being in the Foreign Office and retained this position in which he almost all European countries met on his missions, even under Azeglio, Cavour and Rattazzi. After relocation of the government to Florence he founded in 1867 where the Italian Geographical Society ( today the seat of Rome) and director until 1872. His last official activity was the administration of the Consulate General in Hamburg 1873-74. Since then he has lived in retirement in Turin.
