Croatian Encyclopedia

The Croatian Encyclopedia (Croatian: Hrvatska enciklopedija ) is a Croatian Encyclopedia, which is published by the Lexicographic Institute Miroslav Krleža since 1999. An Encyclopedia of the same in the 1940s remained unfinished.

1st Edition 1941-1945

With the creation of the first Croatian Encyclopedia was begun in the 1930s in Zagreb by the editor Mate Ujević. After the creation of the Banovina Hrvatska, the project also received support from government agencies and the Catholic Church.

The articles were written by academics from the University of Zagreb and other parts of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It was planned to have the encyclopedia published in twelve volumes. The first volume appeared on 10 February 1941. Two months later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Independent State of Croatia was divided was declared. The fifth volume was released in spring 1945 in the final phase of the state.

After the capture of Zagreb by the Tito partisans of the fifth volume was largely destroyed and the staff interrupted their work on the project.

Many people later involved in the Enciklopedija Jugoslavije and other encyclopedias of Yugoslav lexicographical institute, who founded the Croatian writer Miroslav Krleža.

2nd Edition 1999-2009

Since the state independence of Croatia in 1991, the new Croatian Encyclopedia were carried out to completion. The Lexicographic Institute Miroslav Krleža published the 11- volume work in the years 1999 to 2009.
