Crocker Land

Crocker Land is the name of a suspected eighth continent in the Arctic Ocean, whose existence is refuted.

History

In 1906, the American polar explorer Robert Peary claimed to have seen on an expedition from Cape Thomas Hubbard from a land mass on the horizon. The land mass, named after George Crocker, a member of Peary Arktic Club. Peary suspected that the country about 130 miles ( 210 kilometers ) north of the coast would have to Ellesmere Island located at the coordinates 83 degrees north and 100 degrees west.

In 1913 launched the so-called Crocker Land Expedition, which was led by U.S. researchers Donald MacMillan ( 1874-1970 ). It ended in disaster when the ship froze in the ice and was eventually crushed. Only a few members of the crew survived and were rescued only four years later.

On the basis of satellite images could be proved that the continent does not exist. Today it is believed that Peary was deceived by a mirage.
