Tuscan crocus (Crocus etruscus )

The Tuscan crocus (Crocus etruscus ), or Rose crocus is a plant of the genus Crocus (Crocus ) in the family of Iris Family ( Iridaceae ).

Features

The Tuscan crocus is a perennial tuber Geophyt, achieved the stature heights 8-12 cm. The Knoll shell is roughly netzfaserig. In its heyday, the leaves are 5-6 mm wide and longer than the flowers. The throat is hairy. It is only the outer bract around the Perigonröhre available. The outer Perigonzipfel measure 33-37 × 7-9 mm, and are violet and streaked darker on the outside.

The flowering period extends from February to March.

Occurrence

The Tuscan Crocus arrives in Italy before in Tuscany and Elba. The species grows in Macchien at altitudes of 100 to 1000 meters.

Use

The Tuscan crocus is often used as an ornamental plant in borders and rock gardens. The species is in cultivation since at least 1875.
