Features

The Crocus Sieber is a spring green, perennial tuber Geophyt which reaches stature heights of between 4 to 10 inches. The 2-8 leaves 2-6 mm (rarely from 1 mm) wide. There are two bracts present. Occurrence

The Crocus Sieber occurs in Southern Albania, southern Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and Crete. The species grows on mountain meadows, rocky slopes, open forests and patches of snow.

System

From Crocus sieberi several subspecies are distinguished, among other things:

  • Crocus sieberi subsp. sieberi: The plant reaches heights of growth 4-8 inches. The shell of the bulb consists of fine mesh fibers. The leaves are up to 2 mm wide. The flowers are white inside and outside white, or purple, they can also be tinted purple banded or. The throat is yellow and bare. Anthers and pollen yellow. The capsule is 20 to 25 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from March to May (rarely to June). Crocus sieberi subsp. sieberi is endemic to Crete in the prefectures of Chania, Rethymno and Iraklion. The subspecies grows on rocky slopes, in thickets, on pasture grass and snow soils at altitudes from 1300 to 2400 meters.
  • Crocus sieberi subsp. Atticus ( Boiss. et Orph. ) B.Mathew: The flowers are purple blue. The flowering period extends from January to February. The subspecies occurs at altitudes 400-1350 m in the southeast of Greece.
  • Crocus sieberi subsp. sublimis ( Herb. ) B.Mathew: The flowers are blue purple, to the hairy yellow throat is a white zone. The flowering period extends from March to April. The subspecies is found in Greece and southern Albania. It grows on alpine grassland in melting snow at altitudes from 1500 to 2600 meters.

Use

The Crocus Sieber is scattered used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens, lawns and discounts. The species is in cultivation since at least 1841.
