Cromwell (play)

Cromwell is a monumental play by Victor Hugo, which he published in 1827. It is best known for his foreword.

Written in the form of romantic verse drama, is by Oliver Cromwell. In its release, it blew the scope of previous plays. It includes almost 7000 verses about four times more verses than other dramas, additionally requires the play 76 roles, many extras and different locales. Therefore, it was considered barely playable and was premiered in 1956 in the courtyard of the Louvre, 71 years after Hugo's death.

The preface Préface de Cromwell drama is regarded as the manifesto of the Romantic period. This preface Hugo speaks out for the romance and breaks with the principle of strict style of French classicism.
