Crosby is a place and census-designated place in Harris County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The village lies to the east of the county, in southeast Texas, about 70 km from the Gulf to the east is about 110 miles from Louisiana, in the southeast of Mexico and has a total area of 5.9 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Was named the place after Crosby GJ, a design engineer of the railway. The first inhabitant was the 1865 German -born Charlie Karcher, who opened a general store or trading post here.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,714 people in 666 households, and 464 families. The population density was 292.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 74.15 % White, 12.72 % African American, 0.76 % Native American, 0.41 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 10.79% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.17% were of mixed descent, and 18.38 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 666 households 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.4 % were married couples living together. 15.8% were single mothers and 30.3% were non-families. 26.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09 persons.

28.2% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.1 % from 18 to 24, 29.1% 25-44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 35,508, and the median income for a family $ 41,458. Males had a median income of $ 37,244 versus $ 25,500 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,851. 13.4 % of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 16.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 20.1 % of those 65 or older.
