It rises in the highlands of Cameroon, to its headwaters of Bermin Lake belongs to the Bakossi mountains and initially flows westward to Nigeria. There he first takes a southwesterly direction and a southern after the confluence with River and its tributaries Aya Aboine River. The entire river length from the source to its mouth in the Bay of Bonny is 489 km. Its banks are lined with tropical rain forest, oil palm plantations and mangroves. It is navigable and a major waterway in eastern Nigeria. At its mouth, it forms together with the Calabar River, lies the port city of Calabar.

The lower reaches of the Cross River was discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese sailors and explored the upper reaches in the early 1840s by the British John Beecroft.

After the Cross River State of Nigeria's Cross River was named to the east of the river.
