Cross sea

Kreuzsee refers to the phenomenon at sea which occurs when waves from different directions meet ( intersect ). The superposition of these wave systems created a chaotic wave pattern that can be dangerous for the shipping for two reasons: Firstly, cross seas are very poorly predictable, so it's harder to leave every wave in the ideal angle. On the other hand can be much higher than would normally be expected, see interference by the superposition of individual waves.

Cross lakes can have several causes, such as:

  • After a wind shift to the issues raised by the wind waves are superimposed with the old swell
  • By wind generated waves superimposed on a swell that is came running from another sea area
  • Waves running behind an obstacle (eg an island ) back together
  • Waves are reflected by an obstacle (eg a pier or piling ) and meet the accrual of waves

In frontal colliding waves, such as behind a rock in the surf, shooting violently upon impact upwards, one also speaks of ( torn ) Clapotis.
