Crosshouse

Cross House is a village in Scotland and is in close proximity to the town of Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire.

History

Cross House, was built in the early nineteenth century as a settlement for the miners who worked in the numerous mines in the area and was until 1882 part of the parish of Kilmaurs. In 2001, Cross House had 2,454 inhabitants. It houses which opened in 1982 as a successor to the old Kilmarnock Infirmary Hospital Crosshouse Hospital, a major employer in the region.

Personalities

  • Andrew Fisher, Multiple Prime Minister of Australia, was born in 1862 as son of a miner in Crosshouse and worked himself as a miner until 1885 he emigrated to Australia.
  • There is speculation that the Scottish national hero Sir William Wallace was not as generally accepted born in Elderslie in Paisley but in Ellerslie near Crosshouse.
